Are you ready to take your soccer skills to the next level? Do you dream of dazzling opponents with incredible footwork and ball control? Many players feel stuck in their development, unsure how to break through plateaus. But what if you had access to a proven, step-by-step method used by top coaches to develop world-class talent? Coerver Coaching presents an 8-step progression to master the Puskas, helping you unlock your full potential on the field. This isn’t just about fancy moves; it’s about building a foundation of skills that translate to real-game effectiveness, giving you the confidence and ability to dominate your opponents.

The Soccer Player’s Problem: Lacking Composure
Limited Ball Control

Many aspiring soccer players struggle with consistent ball control. They can perform a few basic skills to “get by.” But, they lack the calm composure to navigate tight spaces, beat defenders one-on-one, or execute advanced techniques. This limitation hinders their ability to create scoring opportunities and contribute effectively to their team’s offensive efforts. Imagine a forward who consistently loses possession when facing a skilled defender, or a midfielder unable to control a bouncing ball under pressure.

Inconsistent Footwork

Another common issue is inconsistent footwork. Players may understand the concepts of various dribbling techniques, but struggle to execute them with speed, precision, and coordination. This results in clumsy movements and an inability to change direction quickly. Improving ball mastery skills demands repetitive, focused drills that ingrain proper mechanics and enhance muscle memory.

Difficulty Reading the Field

Advanced ball control is only useful when combined with field awareness. Many players are so focused on the ball at their feet, they fail to read the field effectively. They can’t identify open teammates, anticipate defensive movements, or make quick decisions under pressure. This narrow focus limits their vision and prevents them from unlocking creative plays. To be effective at higher levels, players must develop composure under pressure.

How Do We Solve the Problem?

Enhanced Ball Mastery

Coerver Coaching’s method systematically enhances ball mastery by breaking down complex skills into smaller, manageable steps. Each drill is designed to isolate and refine specifics, enabling players to develop a deep understanding of the mechanics and how to manipulate it in various situations. This builds confidence and allows players to express creativity on the field.

Improved Coordination and Agility

The step-by-step progression emphasizes proper technique and repetitive practice, which strengthens neural pathways and enhances coordination. Players develop a smoother, more fluid style of movement, improving their agility, balance, and overall athleticism. This translates to a more effective dribbling style and a greater ability to evade defenders.

Elevated Field Awareness

As players become more comfortable and proficient with the ball, they can shift their focus from the ball itself to the game. Coerver Coaching integrates drills that force players to make quick decisions, scan the field, and anticipate defensive movements. This helps them develop a comprehensive understanding of the game and enhances their ability to contribute effectively to their team’s overall strategy.

The Puskas 8 Progression: A Step-by-Step Method
Skill 1: Sole + Inside

Start by placing the sole of your foot on the ball and gently rolling it forward. Then, use the inside of your foot to push the ball to the side. Alternate between the sole roll and the inside push, focusing on maintaining control and rhythm. This drill helps develop a feel for the ball and improves coordination between your foot and the ball.

Skill 2: Sole + Laces

Similar to step one, begin by rolling the ball backward with the sole of your foot. This time, use your laces to push the ball forward. Focus on keeping the ball close to your body and maintaining a consistent pace. Ankle flexibility is key.

Skill 3: V Sole + Outside

Using the sole of your foot, pull the ball back in a V-shape. Then, use the outside of your foot to push the ball forward. This drill helps develop agility and quick changes of direction. Practice the V pull and outside push with both feet to improve balance and coordination.

Skill 4: V Pull Behind

Pull the ball back with the sole of your foot in a V-shape, but instead of pushing it forward, pull it behind your standing leg. This is a more advanced move that requires precise timing and balance. This drill is perfect for creating space in tight areas and evading defenders.

Skill 5: Single V Pulls

Perform consecutive V pulls with the sole of same foot, push with the outside foot, then sole roll backward behind standing leg and push to the other side of the body. Repeat with the same foot, focusing on keeping the ball close and maintaining a consistent rhythm. Practice with both feet to develop equal proficiency.

Skill 6: Sole + Inside Switch

Roll the ball backward with the sole of your foot and push with the inside of the opposite foot, and then repeat back to the opposite side. Alternate feet each time, focusing on control, speed and precision.

Skill 7: Reverse Sole + Inside

Perform a reverse sole roll, pulling the ball back with the sole of your foot. Immediately follow with a touch from the inside of your other foot, pushing the ball to the side. This drill combines two different techniques, requiring advanced coordination and ball control.

Skill 8: Combo Reverse

Combine the skill 1 with skill 7. Practice this drill until you can perform it smoothly and effortlessly. This complex combo skills demonstrates your ability to combine multiple skills into a fluid and deceptive movement.
